5 Reasons to Choose Reupholstering over Replacing Your Furniture
1) The cost. These days the cost of new furniture is relatively expensive. If you have a piece of furniture that is made well (solid wood construction, with superior foam and decent springs), but the fabric is simply in need of replacing and/or updating – it’s much more cost effective to reupholster the fabric to create a whole new look. Furniture construction had changed over the years and you just won’t get the same quality construction with new replacement furniture.
2) The repair. Furniture of years past, especially those pieces made before the turn of the most recent century and those pieces not imported, were made better. Furniture used to be made to last for a lifetime, without the seemingly built-in obsolescence of much of today's mass produced furniture. It makes sense to reupholster well-made furniture. If it’s in need of repair, a reputable restorer/reupholsterer will repair furniture, and use the fabric of your choice to create a piece that is updated (if that’s what’s desired) and restored to its previously excellent condition.
3) The sentimentality. If furniture has been inherited, it’s often difficult to consider letting it go. However, if your grandmother’s style is not your own, reupholstering makes perfect sense. It’s an excellent way to get a piece to fit into your existing room décor, while honoring a loved one.
4) The peacemaker. If it’s time to merge two households and one of the parties (or two) is reluctant to consider parting with an old friend (bachelor pad recliner, or first apartment sofa), reupholstering the offensive piece could help save a relationship while breathing new life into a piece of furniture with history. It’s a great way to incorporate the old into the new, while keeping the peace.
5) The environment. Reupholstering furniture is a great way to green things up. The essential parts of a couch are full of materials that are not biodegradable and have no business ending up in landfills. Reupholstering an existing piece of furniture is an environmentally conscious way to contribute towards saving the earth.
